What are Polyphenols?

September 13, 2013

Polyphenols are a class of bioactive compounds commonly found in fruits and vegetables and used by them to protect themselves Blueberriesfrom pests and environmental stress.  A wealth of research suggests that when humans consume these compounds a variety of health benefits may be experienced including lowering of blood pressure and blood glucose, reducing inflammation and fighting off the damaging effects of free radicals. Blueberries and green tea are examples of foods with especially high polyphenolic content. Researchers at the NCRC have recently used the polyphenols found in both blueberries and green tea in a study that demonstrated intense exercise improves the body’s ability to absorb potentially healthful polyphenol metabolites.
