On March 14, the City of Kannapolis hosted a community event to launch a new initiative called Cooking for a Healthy Life, the newest program under the Discover a Healthy Life brand.
The new initiative follows the launch of Run Kannapolis and Loop the Loop that have encouraged hundreds of Kannapolis citizens to run or walk their way to a healthier life. Cooking for a Healthy Life promotes cooking as an additional cornerstone of healthy living, adding access to healthy recipes, nutritional information and a calendar of cooking and nutrition research events.
To develop Cooking for a Healthy Life, the City of Kannapolis partnered with Cabarrus Health Alliance, the Dole Nutrition Institute, the UNC Nutrition Research Institute, the NC State Plants for Human Health Institute, Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, all organizations affiliated with the NC Research Campus.
The March 14 kickoff event was held at the Laureate Center in the Kannapolis City Hall, 401 Laureate Way. Chef Mark Allison with the Dole Nutrition Institute and Meghan Charpentier, MS, MPH, with Cabarrus Health Alliance demonstrated two simple but nutritious recipes- fiesta bowls and yogurt parfaits- and then attendees made the dishes at their table. While everyone enjoyed the meals, more information about Cooking for a Healthy Life was shared, including the website.
Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant commented, “Cooking for a Healthy Life exemplifies the City and our partners’ dedication to promoting healthy eating practices among Kannapolis residents, meeting the need for continuing nutrition education and readily available resources to help people.”
