May 02, 2012

Kannapolis, N.C., May 2, 2012-The David H. Murdock Research Institute (DHMRI) and Bent Creek Institute, Inc., an affiliate of The North Carolina Arboretum, announced the signing of an ongoing collaboration to provide purity and compositional testing services to supply chain stakeholders in the botanical natural products industry. This multi-laboratory non-profit collaborative in North Carolina, named the US Botanical Safety Laboratory (USBSL), will couple the expertise and identity testing capabilities of the Bent Creek Germplasm Repository of The North Carolina Arboretum with the world-class analytical laboratories at DHMRI, and the microbial, pesticides, and phytochemical test services of The NC BioNetworkBioBusiness Center at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, to offer clients a unique resource for confirming the safety of botanical ingredients. Other campuses of the University of North Carolina system will also participate in specialized USBSL testing service offerings.

“We are excited to be a partner with BCI in the formation of USBSL. There is a critical need for testing of botanical supplements to ensure the quality and safety of these products. Our organizations will provide access and testing in an unbiased approach that benefits companies and consumers,” said Jim Oblinger, President, David H. Murdock Research Institute.

“USBSL represents an industry-first scientific collaboration among North Carolina’s institutional centers of core botanical expertise in both research and routine testing services,” said Greg W. Cumberford, President, Bent Creek Institute, Inc. and General Manager for USBSL. He added, “USBSL will help serve the national need for assuring the integrity of botanical ingredient supply chains while bringing more agricultural, technical, and life sciences jobs over time to North Carolina. Our state’s unique bio-botanical diversity and history of medicinal plant cultivation and supply is a valuable national asset that Bent Creek Institute is proud to develop through sophisticated collaborative science.”
